NO TRIPOD for landscape images! YES!
Do you REALLY NEED a tripod for landscape photography? In this video, we answer the age-old question: do you REALLY NEED a tripod for landscape photography? Watch to find out! Being a photojournalist I have never really used a tripod as they are cumbersome to use. That being said can you still get great images without one of landscape scenes. Of course you can as long as your shutter speed, aperture and ISO are doing what you intended them to do. In this video we go through a scene with this in mind.

    Beautiful images Kirk, and I loved the one Andrew took with the duck. I only use a tripod now when I'm doing long exposures. Sometimes in the winter, if i don't have one, I'll lay my hat on a wall or maybe a picnic table to get a couple of seconds or so. The IBIS and OIS on the XT5 /16-80 combo are amazing.

    It's interesting that this is a tripod video. I bought a nice Manfrotto tripod about two years ago to use with my X-T3. Turns out I really used it for the first time last week. I was shooting flowers indoors with a friend who also wanted to try some ICM on the flowers. Shutter speeds were 1-2 seconds for the ICM shots and the tripod was indispensable. I am a newly minted XT5 photographer and last week I used my tripod for the first time (since its purchase a month ago) - taking photos of San Francisco skyline at night. Wanted to keep low ISO 250 and one of the photos required f 8 to keep the bridge in focus. With exposure times 1 s - 8 s would probably be difficult to keep it in focus hand held zooming to 140 mm. My tripod came free using some BestBuy coupon … 😅

  • @kiwikea2002
    @kiwikea2002 2 дні тому

    Thanks for showing us. Certainly IBIS and OIS do a lot to favour handheld photography. (Also, you can use those age-old "tools" like using nature - stones, trees, etc. - or a jacket as supports.) So - I leave the tripod at home more often these days. Or in the car. Saves some weight and saves some time (for family, e.g.) because you won't have to set up stuff and have them wait. (Or complain.) Having said that, there are still times - long exposure or waiting for the right light to slip into composition - when a tripod is needed. How about "smoothing out" the ripples on that lake? So - planning ahead becomes more of an issue. It's also a learning issue. Meaning - I won't sell my Gitzo.

    • @KirkWilliamsonphotography
      @KirkWilliamsonphotography 2 дні тому

      Usually when I’m with the family I don’t have it. But if need be those (temporary tripods) work very well. I decided to keep the ripples in as I think they added to the images.

    Im using an x-t20, and if i decided to use back button focus, what do i set release/focus priority to? Also, if you flick the switch to full auto mode, does it go back to shutter release temporarily?

    • @KirkWilliamsonphotography
      @KirkWilliamsonphotography 6 днів тому

      I just leave it set to focus priority and never change it. Even for sports. Having a bunch of out of focus images would drive me crazy. The cool thing is you can also never change focus modes from single to continuous and back and forth. Leave it on continuous since focusing only takes place when you press the AF button. Just make sure to set the shutter release AF to off.

    Nice overview of the lens. I just bought the Fujifilm X-S20 to have a smaller travel camera kit than my Sony full frame gear. I purposely opted for the small XC15-45 lens and bought the XF27f2.8 pancake lens as a faster prime. The 3rd lens is this Viltrox 56mm f1.7 for portraits. I don’t have enough experience to comment about image quality but I have read a few positive reviews. The good image quality coupled with its compact size and low price makes it a perfect fit for my needs.

    good video, Options are always a good thing, this is a very cheap lens. not much more than the manual focus Chinese lenses. WR is not that big a deal at least not in this price bracket, my Fuji XF 35mm F/1.4 has no WR and that has been problem free for 10 years, you just need to not get them soaking wet (or go to harsh conditions etc) I'll not be getting this as I am more than happy with the Sigma 56mm F/1.4 DC DN (and no aperture ring really makes no difference to me)

    This video popped up and I thought, " What, the 5,000th photog talking about old lenses?" But, you kept it interesting! BTW, that 50/1.4 FD is one of my most favorite lenses in the world . Not due to its focal length, but the character of the images it creates. Unfortunately most of the other FD lenses don't hold a candle to it. The 28 and 24 are average at best. I'd love to find a 17mm in good condition.

  • @Kdkjdjewerdnxa
    @Kdkjdjewerdnxa 11 днів тому

    I’d guess the 1.4 going out of focus in the foreground earlier is due to differences in field curvature.

  • @Kdkjdjewerdnxa
    @Kdkjdjewerdnxa 11 днів тому

    The 1.4 seems generally sharper especially in the center. Fuji not including it on that chart feels like marketing, trying to sell the newer model and dissuade people from buying the old 23 1.4 used.

  • @Kdkjdjewerdnxa
    @Kdkjdjewerdnxa 11 днів тому

    Thanks I’ve been looking around for this exact video. It was weird to me seeing the original 23 1.4 not being on that 40 megapixel chart, because I’ve always seen it as sharper than the f2, especially at f2 or smaller. At 1.4 I imagine it probably resolves somewhere between 26 and 40 megapixels of detail but, stopped down slightly it’s sharper than the f2.

    I don’t know man. Yes the Voigtlaenders are compact, well build and high aperture. But for the price I feel like they are lacking. Why no weather sealing? Why not an electronically controlled aperture, so that the evf view is always showing an image of the highest aperture, which makes it easier to manually focus because a shallower depth of field allows you to more easily assess critical focus? When I’m stopped down on this lens the evf view gets dark and it gets difficult to assess critical focus.

    When I got into photography about 12 years ago I thought it was INSANE to buy a Leica. I got into film before the craze started and got an M2 and M6 for peanuts. So I collected some glass. Then I grabbed an xpro2 so I could at least use some M glass on it. Really liked the Fuji system as well. Found a good deal on an MP240 and then an M246. So here I am, with a Fuji kit, leica kit, and canon for sports. I prefer the leica images to my Fuji. The colors are closest to what I want. When I got an M246, WOW. Easily the most unique sensor I have ever used. Camera gear is a cheaper and safer hobby than drugs, cars, or golf…thank goodness.

    I use both with an X-T5, but I tend to use the 18-55 more often due to the size and weight. I mostly shoot street, family, and travel. And I have also started doing UA-cam videos, which I find is better with the 18-55. For my use cases the 18-55 fits better. I use the 16-80 when I want something specific, like when I know I want to shoot wide or long outdoors in the daytime, or I plan to shoot in bad weather. I’d say 90% of the time, I pick up the 18-55 to take with me. Both are good lenses though, so just depends on how you plan to use them.

    • @KirkWilliamsonphotography
      @KirkWilliamsonphotography 22 дні тому

      George I tend to agree that the 18-55 is a great gab and go lens. And its size is a big plus. The 16-80 is much larger and a bit heavier but for me the added width on the short end and length on the long end are a big plus for what I do.

    • @MrGeorgeCheng
      @MrGeorgeCheng 22 дні тому

      @@KirkWilliamsonphotographyyup agreed! I’ve watched many of your videos and the 16-80 seem to fit better with what you tend to shoot. The main downsides with the 18-55 is the variable aperture and lack of weather resistance. The 16-80 definitely beats it in those regards. Every choice comes with trade offs! Thanks for the video.

    If you are new at Fuji and want to do street photography - just buy them! Don't overthink it. They are everything you need.

    We've all done it. You can be concentrating on one thing while completely forgetting another and kick yourself after. It's always good to be reminded.

    Great tips. I always had a hard time on assignments and talking, especially sports.

      Thats because you were always talking with me or more like I was yammering away while you were concentrating.

    I always use focus peaking on my Fuji…I can’t really get the image in focus manually via the viewfinder or the screen without it.

      Peaking is a good way but I like split image and the lens and the camera would not work together and give me that option often enough.

    Your tips checked all the boxes for me. Seeing unlevel horizon lines just sets off my OCD something fierce.

    Great tips, K.R. Thanks for those. A few I was not well aware of. Now, do you think I'll remember everything during my next photo outing?!?! 😁🙃

    I have a question, how does putting it on this camera make the 28mm a 40mm or the 200 to become a 300?

      1.5 crop factor on the Fuji

      @@KirkWilliamsonphotography is there any way to not have a crop factor? I use 50mm and I love it because its so similar to what I see in real life. My only problem is I already feel its too zoomed, but then with a 1.5 crop factor thats gonna be too much. Is there a way to counter that while sticking to a 50mm focal length?

    So very true about level horizon, never saw a painting by a great master with a slanted horizon. But all other points are equally valid.

      Thanks! One of my major gripes looking at other photographers work. They just look sloppy.
